The City of Newton Benefits From Five Green Flags During the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250
NEWTON, IA – June 4, 2012 – Four green flags following caution periods and the initial green flag of the Pioneer Hi-Bred 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race are the reasons central Iowa is getting a little greener today. Fifty trees, which are being donated by NASCAR, will be planted in the hometown of Iowa Speedway. The tree planting is an effort by NASCAR and Iowa Speedway to help offset carbon emissions produced during race weekends at the 7/8 mile facility.
Newton’s Mayor, Chaz Allen, was on hand at Maytag Park to help plant the ceremonial first tree and shared his thoughts on what this means for the community.
“Newton is excited to receive the 50 trees from NASCAR,” said Allen. “Over the past years we have had to remove older trees that had become damaged with either wind or disease. These 50 trees will go a long way to helping rejuvenating our park system.”
“NASCAR is a tremendous partner of Iowa Speedway, and they are a great community partner, as well,” said Stan Clement, president of Iowa Speedway. “NASCAR always wants to give back to the areas they race in. For them to provide these trees, which will provide cleaner air and a more scenic landscape, goes to show everyone their commitment to this great community.”
Since the inception of this program, NASCAR and the NASCAR Green Initiative have donated 290 trees to communities surrounding Newton.
The next event weekend gets the green flag on Friday, June 22 with the Casey’s General Store USAC Challenge and the Iowa Corn Indy 250 qualifying heat races. Then, the Iowa Speedway Foundation 100 Star Mazda race, the Sukup 100 Firestone Indy Lights race and the Iowa Corn Indy 250 race all happen on Saturday, June 23.
