WORLD RECORD ATTEMPT FOR ‘STOP, DROP & ROLL’ TO BE HELD AT IOWA SPEEDWAY
Officials of Iowa Speedway and the State Fire Marshal’s office announced today that an attempt will be made to set a new world’s record for the largest number of people to simultaneously perform the Stop, Drop & Roll fire safety maneuver at Iowa Speedway in Newton on Saturday, September 7, with registration starting at 5 pm.
The current world record of more than 1600 people was set by the Indianapolis Fire Department shortly after Iowa broke the previous record in August, 2011 at the Iowa State Fair. Going after the existing record is the benchmark, but representatives of the racetrack and the Iowa Department of Public Safety were confident that a new record would be set after speedway fans have gathered for the ‘Prairie Meadows 150’ ARCA Series stock car race.
“We really enjoy another opportunity to take the record from Indiana for the second time, and I personally have had some fun poking at my friend, Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson,” said Ray Reynolds, Iowa State Fire Marshal. “His record stands to be broken by Iowans answering the call to beat the Hoosiers. At the end of the day, this event will showcase Iowans’ fire prevention attitude and may someday save lives in a moment of need.”
A special discounted ticket price of $15 for adults has been established for world record attempt participants, which includes an upper level grandstand seat for the ‘Prairie Meadows 150’ race, scheduled for 8 pm on Saturday, September 7, free access to the Casey’s Fan Walk, free event T-shirt to the first 2500 participants, access to pit road during qualifying, and an opportunity to be a world record holder.
“With a major race scheduled for the same day, and a great crowd expected, we believe that we’ll set a new world record for Stop, Drop & Roll participants,” said Iowa Speedway Sales Manager Karen Baldon. “This is all possible with incredible cooperation from the State Fire Marshal, and of course our great partners, Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company and Casey’s General Stores.”
Persons wishing to participate in the Stop, Drop & Roll world record attempt may order the special discounted tickets by calling the track’s ticketing hotline at 866-RUSTY-GO (787-8946), or by stopping by the Iowa Speedway Ticket Office at 3333 Rusty Wallace Drive in Newton, and asking for the Stop, Drop & Roll discount.
