NEWTON, IA – May 23, 2012 – Rusty Wallace, designer and co-owner of the 7/8 mile Iowa Speedway tri-oval, has been elected to the 2013 NASCAR Hall of Fame. Announced tonight on SPEED TV’s show ‘Race Hub,’ Wallace joins one of the most prestigious fraternities in the world of motor sports.
“This whole process, from being nominated to now elected, has been an incredibly humbling experience for me,” said Wallace. “My family and I are very grateful to all those that made this night possible.”
Offering up congratulations to one of the sport’s legends on behalf of the track he designed was Stan Clement, president of Iowa Speedway.
“Rusty has always been a great ambassador for Iowa Speedway,” said Clement. “His NASCAR racing career, which began in the early 1980s, has spanned into four decades now and this honor is a tribute to his accomplishments – congratulations, Rusty!”
Wallace, who won 55 Sprint Cup races over his 25 year career, the 1989 Sprint Cup Series Championship, and the 1991 IROC Champion, became involved with Iowa Speedway in the initial planning stages.
