Chase Elliott Makes Most Of Limited Practice Time
May 16, 2014
Rising Star Will Miss Saturday NASCAR Nationwide Series Practice at Iowa Speedway Due to High School Graduation
NEWTON, Iowa (May 16, 2014) – Chase Elliott left nothing to chance as far as his time on the track at Iowa Speedway during today’s test prior to the Get to Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin-Williams NASCAR Nationwide Series race on Sunday, May 18.
Elliott, who leads the series standings by just one point over Elliott Sadler, topped the charts in two of the day’s three sessions including the fastest lap of 135.566 mph / 23.236 seconds.
Track time was important for each of the 32 teams that turned laps at the .078-mile track in Newton, Iowa. But for Elliott, each minute was precious since he won’t be at the track for official practice on Saturday, May 17. Instead, he will attend his high school graduation. Elliott, 18, will graduate from King’s Ridge (Ga.) Christian School before attempting to return to Iowa Speedway in time for qualifying which starts at 6:10 p.m. CT.
Elliott was also fastest in the first session with a lap of 134.690 / 23.387. Brian Scott’s lap of 134.811 / 23.366 was best among all drivers in the second session. Elliott and Scott also were among six drivers representing five teams who tested at Iowa Speedway on May 6 during a combined track and NASCAR confirmation test. Today’s test was one of two that series teams selected at which to have extra track time. The other test will be prior to the June race at Kentucky Speedway.
“Wide-Opening Weekend” kicks off Saturday, May 17 at 8 p.m. CT (9 p.m. ET) with the Casey’s General Stores 150 NASCAR K&N Pro Series event, an exciting combination race between the stars of the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West. On Sunday, May 18 the Get to Know Newton 250 presented by Sherwin-Williams will take center stage at 1 p.m. CT (2 p.m. ET) and will be broadcast live on ESPN.
