Ryan Hunter-Reay Wins IndyCar Series Race At Iowa Speedway
Jul 12, 2014
NEWTON, Iowa (July 12, 2014) – Ryan-Hunter Reay simply stole the show on new tires at Iowa Speedway after a 10-lap dash to the finish in which he passed nine cars. Hunter-Reay carved his way to the front after an accident featuring Juan Pablo Montoya set up the late-race heroics to collect his third win of the Verizon IndyCar Series season.
The last time Hunter-Reay led a lap was the final one at this year’s Indianapolis 500.
This was the fifth win in a row for Andretti Autosport at “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet.” It was a dominant race for Target Chip Ganassi Racing driver, Tony Kanaan, who led 247 laps only to be passed by Hunter-Reay with just two laps to go.
Kanaan slipped to third after Josef Newgarden worked his way around the No. 10 with one lap to go. Newgarden recorded his highest career finish in the Verizon IndyCar Series after starting 21st.
Nine different drivers representing six teams have won this season, though none have been from Target Chip Ganassi Racing. In fact, it’s been nine months since a Ganassi car has been in Victory Lane.
The Verizon IndyCar Series has run at Iowa Speedway since 2007, but this is the first time the race has been pushed into July. As such, the Iowa Corn Indy 300 assumes more importance in the countdown to the championship.
Drivers that have won at Iowa Speedway and gone on to win the IndyCar Series Championship include Dario Franchitti, who accomplished the feat twice, and Hunter-Reay in 2012. Next up for the IndyCar Series is a doubleheader weekend at Toronto July 19-20.
