INDYCAR Moves to Night Race in 2019
INDYCAR returns July 20, 2019 to kick off Iowa Speedweeks
NEWTON, Iowa (July 30, 2018) – Iowa Speedway and INDYCAR officials today announced the 2019 Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa 300 will be a night race in response to overwhelming fan feedback. The Fastest Short Track on the Planet will host the event on Saturday, July 20, 2019.
Fans anxious for the return of the Verizon IndyCar Series and open-wheel standouts like Ed Carpenter, Ryan Hunter-Reay and Josef Newgarden to central Iowa next summer can start making plans now. Iowa Speedway is one of the most popular stops on the INDYCAR schedule among fans and drivers.
“The return of a night race for INDYCAR at Iowa Speedway is exciting news for our race fans, sponsors, and the entire region,” said Iowa Speedway President David Hyatt. “INDYCAR races here are not only thrilling sports entertainment, but also a boon for the local economy. Our track provides some of the best racing you’ll see anywhere which will be good for attendance. This is one of our crown jewels and a can’t-miss weekend.
“Announcing our INDYCAR weekend in July allows our fans, local businesses and the City of Newton to plan ahead for what will be an exciting season of racing at Iowa Speedway.”
The early announcement of the IndyCar Series dates, along with the NASCAR’s schedule announcement made in June, sets up three high-octane weekends of racing at Iowa Speedway in 2019. Next summer’s INDYCAR race weekend will also feature the ARCA Racing Series on Friday, July 19, giving race fans a full complement of stock car and open wheel racing.
Iowa Speedway is fortunate to host a variety of motorsport disciplines every year, and 2019 won’t be any different. For the past several installments of the Verizon IndyCar Series race, close racing and thrilling finishes have enthralled fans and delighted sponsors.
“The staff at Iowa Speedway and our partnership with NBC Sports have helped us deliver exciting night racing for the Verizon IndyCar Series in 2019,” said Mark Miles, CEO of Hulman & Company, which owns INDYCAR and Indianapolis Motor Speedway. “Our cars look great under the lights, and the competition should be even more fierce given what should be cooler conditions.”
Iowa Speedway gained international attention in 2007 when INDYCAR became the first major series to race at the newly-opened track. Since that time, the premier stars of open-wheel racing have returned to Newton each year which has become a “bucket-list” item for race fans.
NASCAR released it’s 2019 NASCAR Xfinity Series and NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series schedules in June. For the fourth straight year, the season will open with a NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series and NASCAR Xfinity Series doubleheader on Father’s Day weekend June 15-16.
Iowa Speedweeks will kick off with back-to-back weekends featuring the Verizon IndyCar Series Iowa 300 on July 20 culminating with the NASCAR Xfinity Series U.S. Cellular 250 on July 27.
