IndyCar Driver Excited About Night Race at Iowa

IndyCar Series Iowa 300 gets a “cool” new time in 2019

NEWTON, Iowa (Jan. 10, 2019) – The fans spoke, and Iowa Speedway and its partners at INDYCAR and NBC Sports Group were listening. Fans attending the 2019 IndyCar Series Iowa 300 will be able to see the checkered flag wave under the lights.

The stars of INDYCAR will hit the progressive banking of “The Fastest Short Track on the Planet” under the lights for the first time in four years. The INDYCAR race at Iowa Speedway will be held the evening of Saturday, July 20 at 6 p.m. CT.

“We’re pumped up about this change to our start time for the IndyCar Series Iowa 300 and feel it will be a big hit with fans,” said Iowa Speedway President David Hyatt. “We listened to fan feedback about the heat we occasionally experience at this race, and we applaud INDYCAR and NBC Sports Network for working with us to provide a more favorable starting time for our biggest asset … the fans.”

NBCSN, entering its 12th consecutive year telecasting INDYCAR events, will air nine races including the IndyCar Series Iowa 300. NBCSN will also telecast three IndyCar Series oval-track races on Saturday nights: at Texas Motor Speedway (Saturday, June 8), Iowa Speedway (Saturday, July 20) and Gateway Motorsports Park (Saturday, Aug. 24).

Racing at Iowa Speedway should be thoroughly entertaining – the Newton, Iowa “bull ring” has historically been one of the best races of the INDYCAR calendar, and there’s no reason to think this year’s edition will be any different.

James Hinchcliffe, driver of the No. 5 Arrow Honda-Dallara for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, won the 2018 race which was contested during the daytime on July 8.

“Although both of my [Casey’s General Store’s] victory lane pizza parties happened under the sun at Iowa Speedway, I can honestly say there is nothing like racing there under the lights,” said Hinchcliffe. “Seeing 24 Indy cars on a 7/8-mile oval is something to behold, and this year will be even more special (and a lot cooler) with the race returning to a night event.

“I can’t wait to get back to Iowa and hopefully be celebrating with everyone under the stars.”

The IndyCar Series has staged 12 races at Iowa Speedway since 2007, but only four have been held at night – the most recent in 2015 when Andretti Autosport driver Ryan Hunter-Reay won for an event-record third time. Night races also were held at the track in 2011, 2012 and 2014.

Single-race and event weekend tickets can be purchased in one of three convenient ways.
