Beating the Heat During Iowa Speedweek

Fan safety a top priority at Iowa Speedweek

NEWTON, Iowa (July 17, 2019) – With a spike in temperature expected this weekend, Iowa Speedway outlines ways for fans to stay cool. With this being the first heat wave of the summer, people are urged to take precautions to avoid heat exhaustion and heat stroke due to overexertion and overexposure. In preparation of this weekend’s forecast, guests are asked to stay safe and proactive.

Fans are encouraged to bring sealed bottles of water or empty water containers to the speedway. Water refilling stations are located on the exterior of Concourse bathrooms and misting fans are installed at both ends of the Concourse.

Fans are permitted to bring one soft-sided cooler (14”x14”x14” or smaller) with them through the gates and are invited to visit the Arctic Glacier Cooling Zones located on both ends of the Concourse.

In partnership with MercyOne Medical Center, Iowa Speedway’s Concourse Medical Center will be open at the same time as spectator gates and available for fans needing medical attention. The Concourse Medical Center is located near Turn 1 next to the bathrooms and concession stands.

Develop a strategy for staying cool and hydrated throughout the weekend. Iowa Speedway also staffs more than 100 paramedics, firefighters and emergency medical technicians across the property during event days. Emergency staff will be nearby and prepared to assist guests in case of emergency.

We encourage guests to drink more water than usual, wear and reapply sunscreen and wear loose, lightweight clothing in light colors throughout the weekend.

While enjoying race weekend, we ask those in attendance to look after fellow race fans. If you see someone in distress, please contact Iowa Speedway personnel as soon as possible.
