NEWTON, Iowa – INDYCAR and Iowa Speedway want to thank all of our great fans for being a part of a truly special weekend. We were proud to welcome fans back to the track July 17-18 at Iowa Speedway for the first event since the coronavirus pandemic. As the cars and drivers of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES and ARCA Menards Series put on a show on track, the guests in attendance made the two days of racing a memorable experience for all.
All guests that visited the track each day went through a health and safety screening before they entered the facility and each person was given a face covering and hand sanitizer and were strongly encouraged to use them throughout their visit. Seating was adjusted to provide social distancing for each group of ticketholders and those in attendance did a great job of following the recommended health and safety protocols in place at the track.
The racing at the "Fastest Short Track on the Planet" was entertaining, as usual. The stars of the NTT INDYCAR SERIES had never competed in a doubleheader weekend at Iowa Speedway before, but the teams performed incredibly well under the intense summer heat in the Iowa INDYCAR 250s. Team Penske swept the weekend results as 2019 Indianapolis 500 winner Simon Pagenaud had an incredible drive as he raced the No. 22 Menards Chevy from last on the starting grid to Victory Lane, scoring his first win at Iowa. Reigning series champ and 2019 Iowa winner Josef Newgarden completed the Penske production on Saturday night as he guided the No. 1 Hitachi Chevy to the winner’s circle for his third career victory at Iowa Speedway.
In Saturday afternoon’s ARCA Menards Series Shore Lunch 150, Ty Gibbs dominated the field as the 17-year-old led 140 laps en route to his second straight series win and third in his first four races.
Overall, it was a fun, safe and action-packed weekend at Iowa Speedway and we appreciate the support, patience and understanding of all of our fans as we celebrated a return to racing.
